Windshield install cost
« on: September 17, 2009, 14:41:45 »
My local MB dealer wants $90/hr to replace my windshield and figures it will take 4 hrs. This seems very high compared to what's already been mentioned on this site. Some have mentioned finding an experienced independent guy, but this is becoming more rare. Any thoughts on this?
Also, besides needing replacement for lots of scratches, the seal is leaking because rainwater is developing at both lower corners. The MB guys also mentioned that once they get the old windshield out, I might not like what I find in terms of rust. Does anyone have any tips on what to prepare for if this is the case so that I can achieve a watertight seal with the new windshield. (I will be using a new seal).

You will also need a new aluminum surround.

If the guy doing it, is used to CLKs, he will bend it and its useless after that.

$360 for labor doesn't sound outrages. Try to find a restoration shop and see if they will or know where the talent is.
Basically there is no difference installing glass in a forty Ford or a 113.

My guy in Portland has quoted me 269 for the install, including the windshield!  I have the seal.

I had my windshield installed on my 69 280 sl today at a total cost of $90. It took them 90 minutes. I watched them do it.  Very professional, clean.  I had new glass and new rubber, the chrome molding was original. After spending the whole weekend attempting to do it myself I gave up and called a local auto glass installer.  It was very worth it and not the aggravation, risk of breaking the glass and possibly water leaks.

I will advise that you shop around more.

If you are anxious about rust and what to do if it's present, you might consider taking the old windshield out first.

Use an exacto knife or box cutter to slit the old seal. Remove the aluminum trim on the front with a first cut and then take out the glass with another cut from the inside. These would be long cuts around the perimeter of the old seal.

If you have rust issues, you can address these before replacing the windshield without the installer being tied up. Remember, the seal seals the glass AND the frame. Unresolved rust on the frame will not allow a good seal.

Many glass installers will do the installation at your home. So, if you have rust or not, your installation work can be done on your own time frame.

Thanks for the responses. I'll follow IXLR8's suggestion and do it in 2 stages, makes alot of sense to give me time to get it all in shape prior to installation.

...and while the windscreen is out, it is a good time to consider removal; refinish and replacement (or, complete replacement of) the dash wood.  With the windscreen out, it is considerably easier to remove and to replace these pieces without damaging the dash vinyl or leather.

Thanks Mike. I had already redone the dash wood with the windshield in a while back, and that was tough. Now I have to be careful that it's not damaged while replacing the windshield without removing the wood.
