051 Distributor DISTRIBUTOR Problem
« on: September 22, 2009, 02:38:51 »
Help I replaced my 051 distributor with 051 from my parts car and the car ran fantastic! And that was with points set static!
Then I loosened the distributor clamp (a little to much) so that I could tweak it with a strobe light and the distributor popped up when i started the car.
I know it is not the end of the world but what can I do to get quickly back on track?
Thanks I searched a lot but can't find the right thread.

Align the TDC mark on your harmonic balancer with the scale mounted on the front of the block and insert the dizzy in so the rotor is pointed at the #1 cylinder plug wire on the cap. If it wont run the, just align your marks and your dizzy, pull the dizzy, turn the engine over 360 degrees and reinstall the dizzy pointing at the #1 wire again. You can install the dizzy 180 degrees out. You can look in the valve cover oil fill hole and watch the valves to get it on the right stroke. But you have a 50/50 shot of getting it right without doing that.
Now this is from memory, If I have something wrong, speak up, but I think my method will get it running well enough to tune.
And a shameless plug [ sorry for the hijack, I am desperate] for my Ebay parts as my future depends on selling many of my treasured belongings to save my home, anybody need a 1978 Unimog, no rust, new paint and 50" tires. Well my w113 parts are listed under seller name "adogap66"

Sorry to hear that you have challenges Graphic 66 These are difficult times indeed.
On the clock... when is number one in compression stroke when the lobes are at 12 o-clock or at 10 and 2 o-clock?
Any one ever use a whistle stop tdc tool?
Any one no where to get one?
Thanks Ernie

Compression stroke will be when lobes are both pointing upward (10 and 2) so valves are closed to make for a more spectacular explosion.

Never heard of a whistle stop tdc tool !

Good luck Graphic 66, I am selling off assets myself to tide the family over to my next (when?) job ... or as I read in a US trade journal last week where someone was quoted "we just have to muscle through this"

Hello Ernie,

You can remove the oil filler cap on the valve cover to make sure the lobes on #1 cylinder are basically upward (10 and 2 o'clock ) then align distributor marks and static time.

Graphic 66, I always wanted a Unimog but it is not on my list of priorities during these times.  I will tell some other enthusiasts about it. Good luck.

As long as you haven't moved the gear below the distributor all you need to do is slide it back in and turn the rotor until the distributor slots into place. There's no need for any timing checks unless the gear is moved.

Hello,
Dan is right, as long as the gear has not jumped time you should be able to just slide the distributor back in place.  Be careful not to force it in 180 degrees off!

Note the tangs on the bottom of the distributor are off center-goes in only one way.  If the crank is TDC and the cam shaft has No 1 lobes at 10 and 2, the rotor should point at the hash mark on the distributor(with cap off).   The cap goes on then with the No. 1 wire in line with the rotor.  All the world in sync and purring!!. .. :)
