Wheel Hubs
« on: September 24, 2009, 18:28:19 »
I am looking at a 1963 230SL that has post 1971 wheel spokes and I would like to replace them with the painted orignal wheel hubs and rims.  Is it possible to get these hubs (and I assume the rims to mount the hubs) and if so where would I start looking.  Does anyone have an idea what these would cost?  I am new to this site and to the Pagoda series of cars so any help is much appreciated.

Hello Jordan,

In most cases the aftermarket wire wheels bolted to the original hubs. These can be removed and the original wheels can be installed. You may need an original set of lug bolts posssibly.

Your 230SL came with the steel dish wheels, the small hub caps and chrome beuaty rings.

Your possibilities are:  the original set up with the 14" steel dish wheels and hubcaps with beautiy rings ( most expensive and hardest to find), or the later 14" steel dish wheels with the full wheel covers ( less costly and a bit easier to find), or the non original aluminum 14" dish wheels and the full wheel covers  (save weight over the steel wheels, not exactly original but looks original but uses the full wheel covers) , or a set of 14" bundt cake alloy wheels offered as an option  on the later W113 cars. What is your preference?
