Tachometer Noise

Tachometer. Hello to all.  My 1971 SL has a tachometer issue with chattering and needle jumping.  Does it need lubrication or replacement?

I`ll take a punt and say thay the inner cable needs greasing - not too difficult and if its like the speedo cable, the inner cable can be withdrawn from the engine end, greased and replaced. I`d try that before I started worrying about getting the tacho out for recon.

When you pull it out, it will also be a good idea to clean it up before the re-lubrication. I think ATF is the solvent of choice. You should be able to check the Tech section, Al Lieffring did a great presentation at Blacklick this year.

My speedo was making the same type of noise and also needle jumping - all I did was tighten up a large nut on the transmission box and its all good now - 4 speed manual
