SL 280 Rear axle (enclosed) bearings

Could you please help with the torque value for the cone nut which holds the rear axle bearing? On disassembly, when the tab washer was flattened, the nut moved very easily. I think that the Haynes manual quotes a high torque setting.

Hello Declan and welcome.

The service manual calls for a torque value of 20 mkg = 196Nm = 144.6 lbf.ft if my conversions are correct.

Ah, thats easy. Simply cut a suitable socket in half. Grind socket to provide the lugs to engage in the nut. Weld a steel tube to the cut socket, making sure it is long enough to extend beyond the axle end, then weld the remaining half of the socket (the rachet end) to the tube, and use an ordinary torque spanner. At least thats the theory!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
