My mother bought a new Miata when she turned 80 (8 years ago).  And it was a 5 speed.   The employees at the dealership kind of figured it must be for me or something but I told them it wasn't.   She had a lot of fun with the car for about 4 years and then my sister got it when Mom's knees got too bad for the clutch...

My 82 year old aunt (former owner with her late husband of my Pagoda) just signed up to lease a new E series Cabriolet.  My 88 year old father (her brother) and I convinced her that the E-Class with a back seat would be infinitely more practical than the new SLK she really wanted.  Good genes on that side of my family!

My goal is to convince her to pick it up on European delivery!

Excellent question, John.  The reality is the car will serve as her daily driver and with her typical usage the SLK would not really fit the bill.  When I visit I'm always the driver and we nearly always have someone in the back seat...and often enough she has things or people in the back seat as well.  It gets used frequently, far more often than one might imagine...which is what she realizes.

Who knows--if she thinks hard about it she might go for the SLK and keep her Honda for days of practicality.

About 8 years ago a neighbour of mine bought himself a Jaguar XK for his 80th birthday and now only drives it to the local general store, about 400 meters, every day.  He has a restricted licence now so is not allowed to drive it out of the town boundaries and as the town is only a couple of hundred people he does not get to drive it other than to the store.  He calls it his exercise bike.  Said getting in and out is the exercise for the day.

I told my wife that when I get to eighty I am going to buy myself an Aston Martin.  Her answer was that if I get there I probably deserve it.  17 years to go. Now I have something to really hang out for

Responders can make them as big as they want but I guess in order not to get on the nerves of others they select a reasonable size.

The main reason is that regurgitated content is less important than new content. I could add a diatribe here about quoting unnecessarily or without abbreviating the original post, but I've already addressed that issue here: Quoting

Although, having said that, it's also a browser thing. I find this site much more pleasing with Safari on a Mac than with any other browser / computer combination (and I've tried IE, Chrome, Safari, Firefox and Mac, Windows and Linux in all permutations). Personal preferences may differ.

I guess so, but quotes provide continuity of conversation when there are a lot of posts or will be a lot of posts.  I'd guess, what, over 90% are NOT using Safari?  I really don't know.  Btw, the people are great, it's just the restrictions on the site are a bit vexing.

Hmm...the thread has devolved.

I kind of like the small type component; the way I use it (as a reader) is I read the post; if there is something that needs clarification from the post, and there is a quote, the clarification is usually found in the small print.

No big deal for me.

When you are dealing with a variety of browsers out there; a variety of platforms, and as important--links varying from T1+ down to dial up, all in all I think it works very well.

PS: my aunt (who has yet to hear about my suggestion of European delivery for her) has said that I will be there in Huntington, NY to pick up the car with her come spring!  She has travelled in Europe more extensively than most Europeans have, since the 1950's, and was planning a trip there sometime.  This would be a great opportunity.

So, did you try my suggestion of a different theme? I can tell you did not. In one of them (the sMOOth theme, the one that I like and use) the quotes are the same size as the message text itself.

Secondly, only 53% of our users use IE. 20% use Safari, 20% use Firefox, and 5% Chrome. The reason the site looks different in different browsers is not a feature of our site, but of the OS used, the fonts installed and the browser used. Hence your mileage may vary, depending on your personal preferences.

No, I didn't change the theme, not all that important.  Just noting that other sites default to the most convenient and user friendly formats and leave the individual customization to the more sophisticated techie members.

FWIW, I have NOT made any setting changes to IE7 which is what I use.  It is OOB--out of box.

I've tried Chrome and Firefox, and both of these display most all websites in a way that makes them horrible to look at.  A lot of websites simply look cheap and amateur on these two stalwarts--fonts not legible, "wrong" fonts, etc.  I'm smart enough to know there is probably a way to fix it on these, but don't have the time...try finding an instruction manual for ANY software these days.  Just--if you are lucky--FAQ's that answer nothing.
