Linkage Question RHD 280 car.
« on: November 29, 2009, 12:41:00 »
I am busy putting the linkage together after re-plating everything.

I am putting a 280 engine in a 230 car so the linkage assemblies I have, all have differences, some major some minor. I now have it reasonably well sorted with the help of the very informative tour etc. and some parts from ejm (thanks Ed).

One item I cannot get correct with certainty is the length of the connecting rod from the bulkhead (foot pedal to block swivel) the only link rod that has a ball connector on one end and the loop at the other.
This rod is longer on the 230 cars since the swivel connector pivot point assembly on the block is set slightly forward to clear the 230 style manifold. This is a manual car but this rod is probably the same length on the autos.
I think this rod is NLA so unless I shorten the one from my 230 setup I would need to find a used one.

I have shortened this rod by approx 30mm which allows for this position shown at rest on the picture.

This rod length together with the adjustment bolt at the top of the pedel rod effects the pedal position.

I realise that this is very difficult to measure on the car but if anyone has one dissassembled (or just happens to know) I would like to know the actual length.
The setup I have created works but I cannot be sure about the pedal position.

Thanks Mark

Hi,

Can you guesstimate the length from the picture? Don't think I can get a good measurement from the car now...

Thanks naj
that helps a little but Im still guessing a bit.
My shortened one "guesstimate" is measuring pretty much 320mm centre to centre.

That looks pretty spot on...

The other rod to it operates vertically.

Why don't you start  with the butterfly fully open and set the linkage from there so that the pedal is at maximum travel at that point (including depression of the kick down switch)?
This should have no bearing on the rest of the linkages and their correct set-up.

Its Manual so no kick down switch. I have a bolt stop position but I fabricated that myself and dont know where/how long it should be
, so back to the same question - I think the only correct way is to know the correct length for that rod or to know the distance the pedal should be from the bulkhead at wot.
Neither of these measurements seem available in the bbb, then again, theres no reason why they should be.

As long as you're getting full throttle at your bolt stop then the rest should take care of itself, or am I missing something?

Hi Colin
As I said in the last post I made the bolt stop myself as all of this area was replaced so I really dont know how long the bolt should be in there.
I can make the pedal stop anywhere between 10mm and say 70mm from the floor and could adjust the length of the rod in question to work with that.
It would just have been nice to know the designed length of the rod, this would set everything up as stock before I finish my manifolds etc. I am fitting a new stainless steel exhaust in the next few days and that rod starts to get incredibly difficult to get back at.
Thanks Mark

Don't forget you still have some adjustment left at the short vertical rod where it comes off the bell crank.
I don't have any manuals in at the moment so can't say definitively what your solution is.

Yes I have have that final bit of adjustment on the bolt at the top of the pedal rod. I dont think this information is in any manuals ( I have a bbb and the only rod dimension given is the 233mm rod centre to centre for the rod to the FIP). There is really no reason why this info would be in any of the manuals, as this was never a repair/re-manufacture item.
You either already had the correct rods or you purchased new ones (NLA). I think the only way I'll find out is if someone happens to have one lying around and can stick a tape measure on it. Sure would be difficult to measure in-situ.
I'll probably just end up setting it up to work and set the pedal stop position to feel comfortable - can't be far wrong. thanks for the interest Colin.
