Tacho drive shaft to non-tacho engine, experience?

I have a sedan engine in my Pagoda and it doesn't have a drive for the tachometer cable. I know that it is recommended to change the horizontal and vertical shafts as a pair. To make the job a little bit easier I'm considering to change only the vertical one. Any experience of potential problems if doing that?

Hello,

These gears come in matched pairs.  You may have wear issues just changing one gear. You may not!
I have seen just one changed and it worked fine.  No guaranteed success unless both are changed. Also repair or replacement of the aluminum/bushing is most important or any combination will wear.

If you change just one gear, I would occassionally check the endplay on the vertical timing gear. This will indicate if you have any premature gear wear.

Besides being difficult to change, these gears are expensive!

I've tried to remove the aluminum bushing on two engines with no success.  Still looking for the magic solution!.  ..

Hello Glenn,

I assume you did remove the 10mm set screw and then had difficulty removing the bushing?

Joe, Set screw is out, PB Blaster in, dry ice applied---- bushing is still solidly in there!!!  Is the bushing available from MB?  Cut out the old one to get the new in???

Screw the big cap back in a few threads to give you room to lever it out with a screw driver etc.

Yes, new ones are available from MB or aftermarket.

Yes, Naj has the process!  Try this first.  You can even tap it down a bit to loosen it up before prying it out.
