Horns reissued by Bosch
« on: December 12, 2009, 16:21:46 »
Bosch is making our horns again ( I think????...w113 is not listed but they appear identical) in vintage style, albeit with chromed covers:

check it out here:     http://www.automotive-tradition.de/en/teile/media/Product_profile_Horns.pdf

Unfortunately not only is the chrome cover incorrect but also the frequencies, those should be 290Hz/345Hz not 325Hz/400Hz.
Much of this was discussed already. For example: http://www.sl113.org/forums/index.php?topic=9640.0

Aren't there tuning screws on the back like the American car horns which enable you to adjust the pitch?

I had the idea once of tuning the taxi horns in New York city so they would play chords when honked in unison.

Mayor Bloomberg had a better idea.

The frequency adjustment, on the original horns, is under the data-plate (horn tag) in front.  Uncertain if you can adjust to the old frequencies or even if the new old horns have any adjustment.

So for an early 1963 230sl USA car, did it have a HO/FSA 12/3 and HO/FSA 12/4 or HO/FSA 12/9 and HO FSA 12/10 or neither?  What is the difference between these horns?

John,
HO/FSA 12/3 = p/n 0 320 202 002 290Hz - HO/FSA 12/4 = p/n 0 320 202 003 345Hz
HO/FSA 12/9  = p/n 0 320 202 016 290Hz - HO/FSA 12/10 = p/n 0 320 202 006 345Hz

According to Bosch the 1963/64 230SL came with the FSA 12/9 and 12/10 pair and the MB spare parts list "A" also shows only one pair (p/n 001 542 38 20/ 39 20) so it is pretty certain that a FSA 12/3 - 12/4 pair would not be correct. They do have the correct frequency but not the correct electrical terminals and perhaps also a different mounting bracket

... Uncertain if you can adjust to the old frequencies ..

More on this in a future Pagoda World! :)

From the Bosch catalog page I have, supplied to me by Bosch archives department in Germany, the 3/4 and 9/10 are identical in frequency.  The 9/10 combo is listed for French-delivered vehicles.  There are some unidentified numbers listed as different from the 3/4 horns, maybe it is maximum volume, or something.  But for certain, the catalog pages is listed as the 9/10 for "Frankreich".

Michael,
The addition most likely means that the horns were also sold for French vehicles and as required by French law carried the "country of origin" designation on the tag.  It does not mean that they were sold only in France.

I've got  a pair of restored original Bosch Horn12/9 and 12/10. The horn grill was powder coated and the back housing and the sound disc plate was medium blasted and sanded into smooth finish before painting.

Very nice looking horns indeed.
If you want to sell them then it might be better if you advertise them in this forum:
