Owner's manual still available from Mercedes
« on: February 14, 2004, 16:26:27 »
Probably many don't realize it, but there is a lot of documentation still available from the factory through the Classic Center. For example, the owner's manual is still available as follows:

230 SL (1963 - 1967), German or English language
250/280 SL (1966-71), English language
280 SL (1968-71), German language only

Each one for only about $30 including VAT. Send an email to classic.literatur@daimlerchrysler.com

Also the Technical Data Books are still available:
for Pagoda's from 1963-oct 1966 in English or German, from nov 1966-1971 unfortunately only in German. Cost: about $39.

The shop manual (Big Blue Book) is available for Euro 89, however only in German. Also parts books in print or on CD. The Classic Center in the US sells a CD rom with owner's manual, parts book AND shop manual, all on CD so you may want to get this if you're limited to English.

And at the Mercedes museum in Stuttgart, you can still buy a (reprint from) the original 280 SL sales brochure, Guenther Engelen's book "Vom Barock Zur Pagode", beautiful Minichamps 1:43 scale models and more goodies. Does anyone know whether the museum also sells 'on-line'?

The Guenther Engelen book is also available through Amazon Germany.  They ship to the U.S. as well.  Go to www.amazon.de if interested.  It's a good book, even if you can't read German.

Take a look at our own Publications Page for Mercedes/Pagoda related books. The page gives information about the books but does not list  sources.

About the "best" Pagode book ever written (IMHO):

The Engelen Pagode book ISBN is 3-613-01367-3. It is listed on Amazon (US) if you use "Engelen" and "Mercedes" in the advance search, or use the ISBN. (The title is not "Vom Barock zur Pagode", that is a sub-title.)

But don't bother because Amazon (US) says "Not Available" and does not show any used copies or special orders.

However, amazon.de (Germany) does have the book. I had my copy brought over by a visitor from Germany.

http://www.amazon.de/exec/obidos/ASIN/3613013673/qid=1076842056/sr=1-4/ref=sr_1_11_4/302-5105738-7423250

The problem is that the Classic Center decided to print the owner's manual with a silver cover, not one that looks like the original.  Disappointed, I returned mine.
