Fuel Injection Air Cleaner Removal?

I followed the great advice on checking and replenishing the oil in the FIP and now have nice clean oil filled to the appropriate level. I had the same nasty mess as many others on the sight: unscrewed the dipstick and a bit of old nasty oil oozed out of the pipe. Now that I have that completed I want to replace the FIP air filter but am not exactly sure how to go about this. I know it looks (and probably is) simple but I'd rather not strip something out or foul up my FIP.  Does the filter housing simply screw out?  Do I just unscrew the 21mm(?) nut between the gold cover filter housing and the FI?  I understand the filters are available through MB, does anyone know the part number for the filter?

Hello Steve,

There is an early filter (19mm skinny nut) #000 075 0632 and the later with a (22mm skinny nut) #000 075 1132.  Your's should be the 19mm #000 075 0632.  Use a skinny wrench to get it off. It unscews, but can be tough.

The key word in Joe's advice is "skinny". There is not enough clearance for a standard wrench. If you can find a "refrigeration" or "service" wrench, that might do. Otherwise buy a cheap wrench (hopefully soft) and grind the two faces so that it fits in the available space. once you start this it will be clear, if it isn't already.

I use a thin SCW-22 cone wrench (like this one), standard issue at any decent bicycle shop.

Also a bike wrench from your local bike shop to switch out pedals on a mountain bike works perfectly for the later filter nut sizes.

Great advice, thanks! I dug into my bike tools and wouldn't ya know my cone wrenches jump from 18mm to 25mm, no 19mm!  I'm off to the bike shop tomorrow - nothin' wrong with having more tools.  Perhaps I'll pick up two.

Hello Raymond,

When these become clogged your engine will starve for cold idle air supply causing the could idle to be rich and foul plugs. 

You can remove it and blow through it to see if it is unrestricted or just replace it to make sure. 

I find that cars undergoing a body restoration suck in a lot of paint dust if they are started and stopped (moving them around). In these cases the air filters can easily become clogged.
