Speedometer cable 1967 250sl automatic

My speedometer cable squeaks and chirps when the weather gets cold
The sound coincides with the speedometer slightly jumping
Is there anyway to lube it?
How do I get to it?

Yes, you can lube it, I did mine a long time ago, I don't remember exactly which end but i was able to take it apart clean the inner cable, grease it and put it back together, Check both ends one of them should be easier to un-crimp than the other.

Hey jnash,

I posted a detailed description on this  topic before Christmas - its quite easy and can be done without taking the speedo out - with a bit of contortion, the speedo cable can be disconnected from the gear box end (on a 230manual at least ) and the inner pulled out and greased - easy peasy instant fix. The front of the car needs to be on ramps.

did you find a small nylon bushing on one end of the cable? if so on which end. i have a 280sl and you can pull the cable through the speedometer end without removing the housing from the auto. trans. looks the same as the tack cable perhaps someone replaced with a tack cable? it did work
