some help with starting issue, please
« on: February 21, 2010, 06:08:20 »
OK, so I know I should be able to figure this out from the previous strings but, for the life of me, I can not.  Here is my problem:  1964 230sl starts fine when cold but after warmup the card idles poorly, in fact it runs really crappy below 2k rpm.It runs poorly for as long as I drive it, even if I take it on highway for 30 minutes.    OK, so I have a stuck thermo-time switch...probably.  But if I shut the car down and leave it alone for 10 minutes or so it will then start up fine (with my manual csv inducement) and run fine.  So where is the hang up in the tts?

I appreciate any help,

Thanks,
g

Hello,

Check to make sure that the WRD (Warm Running Device on the injection pump) is not stuck first of all. If it is stuck in the "cold" position the car will only run correctly when cold. You can check this by checking to make sure that he air intake for the unit shuts off when the engine is warm.  Next make sure that the CSV (cold start valve) on the intake manifold is not leaking fuel into the engine. Check this by removing the small bolt with ignition on and watch for fuel leakage.

Check back and we will continue if needed.

Have you got the length of the waxstat pin when in the cold position, i think you call it the feeler.

The pin length is 16mm on my spare thermostat as measured from the top of the black plastic base piece to the tip of the pin.
