steering wheel fix up
« on: March 03, 2010, 01:10:36 »
I have a white steering wheel which is original.  It has crack lines.  Can these crack lines be "filled in" or otherwise repaired?

Steering wheel epoxy patch kits are available...some come with wheel pullers and a choice of light or dark epoxy. About $50. Eastwood may have this     Eastwoodco.com

John,

I'm in a process of refinishing an ivory one, or I can redo yours.  If interested PM me for more details.

Cheers,

Yes, they can be repaired.
For years restorers have been using the two-part Epoxy called PC-7...available at your local hardware store. This product is dark gray and the consistency of sticky playdoh.
The same company also offers a similar product called PC-11 which is white/off-white and can be shaped, sanded, tinted and/or top coated with a variety of products.

Hi Shaun--

You indicated that you are restoring a white wheel at the present time.

What color white are you using? Is it a Mecedes color-code white?

What type of paint are you using--enamel, acrylic, epoxy, color plus clear?

These questions about color have been posted in the past, and it seems that no one wants to divulge their secrets.

Thanks in advance for your advice and guidance.

Hi Joe,

There is no secret, the cracks get filled with epoxy, gets sanded smooth & paint. It does take time (to do it right)
as far as the paint is concern, I have it made at my local paint shop, color sample is from the steering wheel itself. the paint that I use is same as exterior of a car base & clear coat.

In the last issue of Pagoda World there was an article by Phil Auldridge who has a complete restoration process including paint manufactures and source, If you can get a copy it'll be your best bet.

Hope this helps! :)
