230SL engine or not? Ask the 230SL detectives
« on: March 06, 2010, 06:04:35 »
Maybe I'm wrong, but the casting features on the valve cover of this engine look like those you see on a 250 and 280 series engine.

Did they have 230 series engines with this later style valve cover casting?

The picture you posted looks like a 230SL. I base this on the valve cover casting.

Take a look at this picture. I marked the provisions I question in the valve cover casting that would lead me to believe my original posted picture is a 250 or 280 series engine.
Did any 230 series engines has these provisions?

I think the banjo fitting breather tube was replaced with the rubber elbow during the 65 model year.  280sl's have a 1/4 twist oil cap. My 66 230 has the same valve cover as the one in your photo, The notches you hilighted were for improved crank case vent baffeling.

What are the VIN and Engine #s of your car?

If your car is a 65 I would think your valve cover looks like mine.  The rubber breather was later then 65 I believe.  I have a late 65 and it was just rebuilt.  The spark plug wire frame is also missing .  I attached my photo for reference.  Hope it helps.  Your valve cover is definitely right.

The change in the breather line was introduced in December 1965 and that included the fitting on the valve cover.
