Dang Fuel Pump Question Again

Hi Everyone.

We have taken the 1966 230sl out of gargage after three years of sitting. Car started right up. Drove it a mile to mechanic. Had them change rear brake shoe pistons, shocks, clutch sleeve pump, water pump, all brake lines, and all front bushing & tire end rods, flushed radiator, and tune up. Man, anything with fluid basically died.

I told the mechanic to drain fuel and clean gas tank. Several days later, mechanic stated fuel "smelled fine". When I picked up the car and drove home, the car died. We flatbedded back. Mechanic said he saw black fuel in the canister that holds the fuel filter.

Today, when I called to pick up car, mechanic said fuel pump has stopped working. He tried direct power and the pump was silent.

Reviews/comment here indicate to me that the pump is probally "gummed Up" . It is a bosch fuel pump. I purchased 9 years ago, but only 865 mile in that time.

Below are some fuel pumps for sale. I know the Bosch for $600., but does anyone know the other brands?

On Monday, we are going to try to reverse the polarization to see if pump will break free and then clean with a flush.

Hello,

Remove the fuel sender in the trunk. If you look in the tank you will most likely see a lot of dirt/rust etc. Just pulling the drain plug will not clean the dirt out of the tank.

Drain the tank, remove it flush well or have it boiled clean by a radiator shop.  If it is rusty inside you may have to acid treat and seal it. This is quite a tricky process.  See the "fuel tank tour".   Clean the fuel drain/filter screen in the tank. Remove the intake fitting of the fuel pump. It has a filter screen in it and clean it also.

Yes reverse polarity on the pump may work. You can also pull the bottom cover off and clean everything up. This is an easy fix.

Re-install everything and you should be good to go. Happy Motoring !

The hardest parts are getting the tank back in and not stripping or breaking the machine screws that hold the bottom plate on the fuel pump.

oh I also broke one of the studs that holds the fuel tank when I was taking it out. So don't be afraid to let the bolts soak in liquid wrench or something prior to unbolting them.

I used a fuel pump from a 450sl (280se 4.5)once, works fine, but I hung it with wire hanger!

Yes these electric fuel pumps work very well. They have basically the same specs as the original W113 fuel pumps, but are smaller and simpler. As with the W113 fuel pumps, these are also gravity feed and must be hung below or even with the bottom of the fuel tank. I believe the W108 4.5 bracket would also work for hanging your pump. In addition you would have a place for an additonal fuel filter, above the pump as on the 4.5 .

These fuel pumps also were used on all the W107 SLs which had the EFI (elcectronic fuel injection).  They were used on the early 350 SLs, SEs, and the 450SLs, SEs.  I suspect that if Mercedes had continued production of the W113 cars, this style Bosch fuel pump  would have been version #3 for the W113 cars.

I am looking for similar info.  The mechanic says the (non original) pump is shot and recommends putting in a "pierburg" if I can find one.  I find the same listings for our 65 230SL as above and would appreciate any feedback on which pumps can be used.  We would prefer not to have to spend the $600 - $800 for the original equipment if possible.  Barry
