230 SL wheels/rims/hubcaps
« on: March 25, 2010, 00:17:12 »
I have recently bought a 1963 230SL which does not have the original wheels.
I would like to possibly put new steel wheels with original hubcaps which I believe are the small central hubs and "beauty rims".  Would this work or do I  need to find original wheels?
Any suggestions on U.S.  sourcing would be appreciated.
thanks,
Greg

I have a similar problem as I have wire wheels on my car - but luckily a lot of different steel wheels from MB will also fit a Pagoda. I've just bought 4 used from a W108 - they are 6" wide as was standard on a Pagoda. If your car is very early, the rims were 5,5" wide and similar to the ones used on the W123 - one of the most common MBs of all times produced from 1977 to 1985. Both options should be easily available used or new in the US. In terms of hubcaps the 230s and early 250s had the centre cap/beauty ring combination. In order to fit this to any of the a.m. wheels, you'll need pins, but you can also do as I am currently doing - fitting the one-piece hubcaps of later Pagodas, not 100% original (if your car is an early example) but very close and much cheaper... ;)
