What a beauty! Yellow Pagoda
« on: April 10, 2010, 18:31:14 »
Pics of this car may already of been circulated but i couldn't find a link. This car was at Essen this year for 150000 Euro. The discription said it had a 5 speed but the gear knob was from a 4 speed. Not convinced it is the best choice of colour!

I am convinced it's not the best choice of colour. Terrible.

Engine bay looks nice from what I can see on my laptop screen.

We have/had a member that had a yellow Pagoda.  He nicknamed it "Tweety".

they will see you coming from a mile away!  Having had a yellow car once in my lifetime, i would say it's an aquired taste , not for everyone but I think it looks greAt!
There is a paler version yellow of the r107 that I think looks good, and generally a bargin when resold! hmm

I am not sure whether a Pagoda was ever available for purchase in yellow - there is no paint code listed in the our technical manual - but M-B produced a yellow/orange one in the late 60s for extensive safety tests with different paints. It is quite well described in the book "Faszination SL - W113".  Here is a scan showing the 280SL that was used.  The car in Essen looks a bit mor lemon-yellow but Tweety was quite similar to this test car.
[As an aside, when I look at this picture in the book I always wonder whether the publisher (MB) realized that it is also an advertising for FIAT.  :)]

I sold cars to get through school and off and on while trying to be... an artist shall we say.  :-\    I worked at a Ford and Nissan dealership.  Our order manager was crazy for brown, any color that seemed to look brown and in every concievable two tone combination.  What an ordeal it was selling those things, dozens and dozens of brown trucks and tbirds and z cars.  But as salesmen say, "there is a butt for every seat".  Now you take this yella car... well the yellow has a little too much green in it...knock it down/mellow it out a bit and put a cognac interior in and it would look great. If I could afford it, well lets take her for a spin. But I suppose my opinion is to be taken lightly as I have a 542 dark red or is it brown SL.  Hey the price was right.

This car is listed at 150 K EURO... that's over $200K! How about that for values... And this car isn't even offered by the MB Classic Center, never known for shy pricing, but by Stickel. Reputable, but is that worth the price?

It should have been painted GOLD instead of yellow at that price!

I noticed there is no radio. Maybe the cost of buying one took the restoration budget over the top. The price could maybe include one with an MP3?  That way one could hook up an ipod that plays subliminal soothing messages to offset the bright color that might otherwise trigger a fight or flight response ;D ;D ;D

I haven't seen it so I really cannot judge, but surely its in fantastic shape, which the pictures obviously indicate.

The radio deletion plate can cost more than a radio. That might be why such a high price.

I'd also never seen a yellow Pagoda before.
But at techno Classica, i looked at the Paint number, and it matched with the yellow on the pagoda, so I do think it was possible. Or he made a plate with the new paint code.

Here is a photo that Gerard Wuisman posted on the German site indicating that it is painted in code 378 (sun yellow). The color may  look better than it appears in these photos taken with a flash.
Jonny B. what do you know about this paint code?

Wow - 000123 is a really early number.
Maybe they offered this color until they actually saw it in the flesh...

I searched through my color chip books, and found no listing for DB 378. All the listings around that number are blue shades. I would stick my neck out a bit and say that DB 378 would not have been a yellow shade, some of the color families tended to be in the same run of numbers. For example, most (but not all, I grant you) of the reds run in the 500's.

The only listings for anything close to was DB 624 - yellow, DB 630 (early color) - yellow or DB673 - Sahara yellow, more of a mustard tone, DB 680 heliosgelb and one color chip of DB 1223 verkehrsgelb (this one is close) and is listed as a 1986 color in my Glasurit book.

Yuk on the color....some cars (Porsche 911) look  good in yellow.  I do not think an SL is one of those cars.  I think a color that is not often seeing but looks great with all that chrome...is black.
IMHO
