Classic car rental South Africa
« on: April 27, 2010, 21:33:43 »
Dear all,

I'm planning to travel to South Africa with friends in November 2010 and thought I'd heard about a company that hires out classic Mercedes Cabrio's (probably not Pagoda's but 107's). Does anyone know who they are and whether they can be recommended?

Dealing with South African companies is generally at the same level as dealing with most US companies....the work ethic is generally the same as with any of the other company that is located in an ex brit colony (US, Australia, New Zealand and Canada)...while not as prim and proper as those enterprises in mother England, South African companies like all colonial enterprises have an element of cowboy ethic  ...you will not experience a culture shock.

Caveat...It is wise to rent a reliable newer car if you plan to do the same in the Johannesburg area....enjoy your visit to paradise

Mmm

Chapman's Peak Drive in a Duetto....

That's a good find - I did a similar thing in 2006 - out of Christchurch (NZ) in a Mk2 Jag. Very nice - til it broke down in the middle of nowehere (that would be most of NZ)

I had heard of Motor Classic, indeed. Was just checking if one of our South African members knows them and can recommend them. And indeed, I would only do this in Kaapstad, not in Jo'burg.

And Tosh, Chapman's Peak drive would be on the list...

Frankly, I find this statement offensive and distasteful to say the least...

Not all of us here on the southern tip of Africa behave like a bunch of hillbillies.  ::)

Peter,

I'll ask around in our local Mercedes-Benz club to see if I can find more info for you as most of the companies seem to be operating from Cape Town or Johannesburg.
If your trip includes a visit to the eastern part of the country (Durban and surrounds), you are more than welcome to drop in for a chat.

Ek verstaan nie waarom jy het so "bent out of shape" geword oor my boodskap.... Wat ek het gese is dat daar is geen verskil tussen die VSA ann ZA...en mense moenie dink dit is Tarzan se plek nie...dit is my boodskap...lekker bly en "loosen up"...ZA is nog die beste plek in die wereld.

Hi Peter
Sorry for slow response.Motorclassics are the guys to deal with(the only guys I could find who hire out classics)
There is another crowd in Cape Town called Motostars, but they only sell.Im telling you about them just as an aside,as they have a nice selection of classic vehicles on their floor and its worth a visit.
Regards
Shane

Thanks Shane.

I'll look into it, and see if I can smuggle in a visit. How's the world cup circus affecting your neck of the woods ?

Hi Peter.
The world cup circus is alive and kicking.Cape Town is a buzz with all the fans from around the world.Apart from a few strike issues with Stadium security and some of the public transport,it looks like a great success so far.Pity our local boys have blown their chances.I think the only chance we have of progressing is if we beat France 5 -0,which is a mighty tall order.Another good opportunity when you visit Cape Town would be to track down our Local Chairman of the Mercedes Benz club.He has an astonishing collection of classic Mercs. If you are interested,I will get his details off to you.
Kind regards

Thanks Shane... if schedule permits (I'm the only classic car buff in the group and we're only in Cape Town three or so days) I'd like that... I'll get in touch again when I know more about my schedule.
