Coil for 123 ignition
« on: April 28, 2010, 20:06:17 »
I've done a number of searches on the site to find out what coil others are using with a 123 ignition, I see reference to using the blue bosch coil part number-  0.221.119.027 K 12V, then others have said that is not the right coil. Then I see others say use the red coil but when I checked with a parts distributor he said the red coil was wrong but he may not have been familiar with the 123.

I'm curious to know what coil others with a 123 distributor are using/recommend and if possible the part number. Also if anyone knows of a reliable vendor that supplies the correct wires that would be helpful as well, I see the Beru connectors are recommended but not sure I should attempt to make them up myself as I never did that before (I have a 1970 280SL)

Thanks!

I took a look at my invoice but no Bosch part number for the coil.  It was listed as a Bosch High Energy coil.  I bought it from Brooklyn Motor Werkes along with the 123 distributor.  If you like you could give them a call 1 (608) 455-7441 ask for Albrecht or Nathan for the part number.

Are there matching coils sold by 123? When I converted my 66 230sl to PerTronix I also bought the PerTronix coil to be sure the components were compatible.

They recommend using a hotter coil.  It's an off the shelf Bosch unit.

Hi James,

Brooklyn Motor Werkes recommended the Bosch Red coil, SLS in Germany seems to recommend the same one on their web site for the 123 ignition on a W113, I'll post the part number when mine arrives. I'm trying to understand the ballast resistor part now It appears the red 1.8 ohm resistor is the correct one to use for the red coil best I can tell.

Hey Mark. So what is the coil they recommended?

Thanks Mark. I have the red coil w/ 1.8 ballast (still use points) but maybe others could use the P/N. Good to know if I ever try the 123. It strikes me as a good upgrade if and when I ever abandon the points. I've been lucky mine have worked fine thus far.
