Honk & Wave?
« on: April 29, 2010, 08:43:28 »
This is out of pure curiosity - which other collectible cars do you wave to on the road and who waves back?

Old 356 Porsches and any old Mercedes....the 107's tend to wave first at me!   I have been known to wave also at a few Austin Healy 3000's.

A few nods and waves now and then from vintage cars.  Some serious thumbs up from "the brothers".  The 107 owners?  Sorry to say, 'round these parts the majority of them I see driving are shall we say, rather mature women?  Oblivious to vehicles that surround them.

I'm with Mike on this one -- sort of. Way more often than not, when I pass a later SL model (107, 123? or newer) they generally -- men and women -- look like they are in la-la land, and very full of themselves. The women I give a free pass, because their beauty is merely enhanced by a classy car -- but the guys?... they need to wake up.

I almost always give a subtle wave to any car that has character -- (I was going to say any car that is a classic but thought twice....) -- and they usually reciprocate. I do not honk too often -- usually only when I see someone I know...

......hey, I'll wave to any classic (sorry, Dan) and or vintage car, which are mostly of British nature here.....this being British Columbia. Most of them seem to think that "I" the Mercedes driver am to snobbish to wave, so their reaction, the return wave, seems to be a bit delayed for that very reason.....I think......

But I never honk, unless  oncoming traffic is making a dicey left turn in front of me, that's how I lost my 911SC......but that's another story......

CHEERS !
WITT !

PS: 107 drivers never wave back.....male or female....!

My tendency is to wave but here in HK (Asia), people tend to be quite shy about greeting strangers so it's not a common practice at all.

When i first moved to wisconsin, I got stares, then nods then honk and waves etc.,  As for the stares , - according to my mentor, i dont fit the 'profile'- I am black (african ) and i am also in my early thirties, but it all worked out , now i get thumbs up from so many drivers, i think i might get arthritis in my fingers before i turn 34 ( that was a joke guys ) and check this out, even the cops in the county flash or give me thumbs up when i'm in the pagoda ... I like to show appreciation to anyone thats making an effort to keep these older cars on the streets.

I have always since the late 1960's flashed the lights at other Mercedes as our cars were unique and somewhat snobbish but I do wave at other vintage drivers if they wave or honk first. I like the sound of my Bosch horn but don't honk. I always thought that flashing lights was cool as only Mercedes could do it from the signal stalk.

Cynewan,

About the ONLY people that wave or nod (at me in the 280SL) in normal daily around town cruising ARE African Americans.  "The Brothers".  They appear, to me at least, and aound here to have a higher than average sense of style?  I don't know what else to call it or how to describe it.  The see a fine car, and they acknowledge it...always with a smile as well.  The wave or nod is not good enough.  Have to have the smile.

That's been my experience in Michigan.

Profile?  What profile?  Of "my" 66 contributors for the Pagoda Style book, we have black, white, asian, arab; christian, jewish, islamic, protestant.  Fom 6 countries; doctors, lawyers, men, women; rich, poor. Employed, unemployed, underemployed, young, old, middle age.

What's that about profile?  The only profile I've been able to glean from it all is "those in the know" with exceptionally good taste.

Anybody else have any ideas?

  Michael,
I hope no one is taking this the wrong way. We are all sharing our experiences . My mentor just made that comment as a joke as to why it happened, i dont know and i dont care..... You know you live in a friendly area when even the cops in your area flash or wave when they see you .

when my parents bought our first VW back in 1960 there were so few of them (in rural Kansas) that Beetle owners would honk and wave when passing by.

One group of people that surprisingly awe and stare at my 111 are younger people. I am talking about late high school and college age. They think that my dark olive green 280 SE is the coolest car on the road (I would have to agree of course). With all of the assumptions that kids care only about things that are high-tech, I find this observation encouraging.
