Auto Gear Box Problem
« on: May 13, 2010, 11:47:10 »
On my 66 rhd 230sl, I am experience the following symptoms;
1. Jumps out of gear on rough roads (ocassional, but persistent problem)
2. Gear lever slack/ "rattles" left to right (persistent, but increasing problem)
3. Doesn't always engage/find D (new problem)
4. Kickdown inoperable ( I bought it that way)

So, assuming 1,2 and 3 are related, am I looking to replace bushings or do you think something more fundamental is at play?

Hello Drew,

Yes sounds like a shifter bushing problem. In addition the rear trans mount may be bad.  I would also inspect the rubber flex disc closely while your in there.

For your kickdown problem, first check that the switch under the gas pedal is being depressed when the pedal is at full throttle. It could just be your floor mat in the way. If the kickdown switch is actuating and you still don't have kickdown then your usual electrical testing can help. Check out the schematic at the bottom of this page http://www.mercedesdismantlers.com/16BoltInstallationInstructions.html  .

Thanks Graphic!

ja17 mentioned rear transmission mount as a possible prob. Is that this part 14-0005 listed here?

OK, so mechanic has isolated problem to gear selector linkages and am preparing to order a few parts (sounds like I have a similar problem to Luins). Two questions
1. Does anyone know where to get part 226108 (number 71 on the SLS website auto gearbox diagram)? Looks like some kind of a pin
2. What do you do when one supplier seriously underprices an item?
