Thickness of data plate
« on: May 22, 2010, 18:24:12 »
Hello all,

I've found a vendor who can make me a stamp to use in a press to recreate the data plate that was lost when my car was in the shop being painted.

He has asked me what thickness the plate will need to be..... in that mine is lost I don't know and I'm not sure what even to guess how thick, I doubt it needs to be very thick at all but I don't want it to be so thin as to be flimsy.

Would anyone familiar with thicknesses of sheet metal  know the correct thickness a plate like this should be? even ballpark is ok.

And to be precise I'm referring to the data plate that is mounted on the inside fender under the hood of a 70 280SL, it has raised/embossed type fonts.... the one that is painted the same color as the car. Not a plate on the firewall or elsewhere.

I wire burshed the paint off my data plate and it measures 0.015" (fifteen thousands inch) my US Standard sheet metal table shows 28 guage sheet steel as 0.0156"

How did the data plate turn out?  I need to have one made and have run out of resources. Feel free to email me. Thanks, Mark
