Michelin X tires
« on: June 12, 2010, 16:31:45 »
Hi--

I am restoring a '65 230SL, and it definitely needs new tires.

I see that COSTCO is offering a $70 rebate on the purchase of four Michelin tires.

Costco offers a Michelin X blackwall 195/70-14 at about $75 per tire.

Should I jump on what appears to be a pretty good deal?

Is the Michelin X a good tire for the 230SL? I assume it is the same Michelin X that was the best rated tire some time back.

Will the 195/70 be a good fit (and look good) for the 230SL?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Joe

I am running 195/75 R14 Michelin X on my 1970 280SL.  I think they look very good and they ride nice.

This size results in the speedometer error reading only .05%.  It overstates my speed by just a bit, but at least the slight miscalculation if in the favor of helping me abide by the local speed laws.

Hey Jim. Car is looking very nice. I like the new top that replaced the other "new top"... Good choice.

BTW, I have 195/75 Michelins as well. Mine are Michelin Ones, which are no longer offered. They have worked out fine for me.

Michelin X?  As in X?  Just X?  Do you have any idea how old they are?  I hope you mean X-One, or something made this century...

At $230 for four, after rebate, it looks like a good deal.

I know of a Michelin XDT.  Is this what you are referring to?

Michael:
I looked at my tires again, and yes they are Michelin X Radial all season tires. look to be manufactured in 2006.  I provided pictures to satisfy your curiosity.

Aha!  It's a Club Store (Costco, Sam's BJ's) tire only.  I thought they had stopped making it years ago because it was the first radial tire.  First the X, than the ZX, then XZX, etc. and X kind of got lost.  Apparently the name is still there.  I have not checked the club stores for tires...

(note there are other tires in the Michelin line that are only available in certain retail outliets: Weatherwise II from Sears, and Destiny from Discount Tire.)

Your color combo will rank as one of the most ideal in my ideal 113 color combo list.  I frequently have this conversation with friends so now I can add one more!

Michelin refers to the 195/75/14 as X radial DT.
