Reproduction Euro License Plates
« on: March 27, 2004, 23:00:07 »
Hello Group,

I know the last license plate number my car had when in Italy.  Is there a company that makes good reproduction classic European license plates with custom numbers?

Thanks,

Hi Rodd. Try GAK Motorsports. They are on the web. I purchased a custom Euro one with the necessary frame for around 50. The frame is black plastic -- chrome ones can be found but are much more.

Good luck

Search Ebay.  I was able to buy a custom front plate and chrome bracket and fram for $27.00.  The search I used was Euro plate.

GAK (www.driversfound.com/gak/) seems to only do German plates, I need Italian.  I have not learned to trust e-Bay yet.  Maybe some day!   :)

Here's a site that shows license plates of the world.  www.worldlicenseplates.com/  If you scroll down on the left and click on Italy, then you will see the large square rear plate and the wide and narrow front plates that I am looking for.

I e-mailed www.europeanplates.com and got a reply that they don't have blanks to make the old Italian sized plates.

I e-mailed www.eutags.com tonight, we'll see what they say.

You can buy almost any style reproduction plate from www.licenseplates.tv, including the vintage square italian plates.

Well, eutags.com could not do it.

It looks like licenseplates.tv can do it, but their classic Italian plates say PROVA on them for some reason.  I will e-mail them next.

Guess what?  licenseplates.tv can do it!  Check out the Italian plates at:

http://www.licenseplates.tv/default.php?cPath=2_245

Scroll to the bottom.  Mine will be like the example "MI 25 2433".  They just added this at my request.  I'm going to ask for a classic looking front plate as well.  If that works out as well, then I'm going to order and I'll let you all know what my experience is like.

Tom (TA250SL):  Have you used licenseplates.tv before?  Does anyone have any personal experience with them?

Thanks,

Rodd

Rodd, I haven't purchased from this company, but from what they show on the website I think the products look authentic and well fabricated.  I hope you like them.

What's the deal here Rodd? Do you have to have a corresponding registration to qualify for a plate? If not, how is this not a counterfeit worry?

Cheers,

kns.

KNS,

That's a good question, I'm not sure.

Regarding current style plates, there my be a rule against selling them in the country they are representing.  For example, if I lived in Germany, they might not make current style reproduction German plates for me.  I don't know, I didn't ask.

Regarding historic plates, I would assume this is not a problem.  Am I correct to assume that classic style plates are not valid for road use?  I would think the countries, or provinces or states, would require current plates to some degree.  For example, a friend found old Ohio plates from 1966 at an antiques store.  In Ohio, as in most of the USA, the year the plate was made used to be stamped in just like the plate number.  If I were to put these on my car, I don't think the police would approve.

Now, what I'm doing is buying classic Italian plates and I live in the USA.  So I don't think there's any problem with counterfeiting.  Although, I could ship them to an Italian person, then would they get in trouble for using them?

You ask a good question.  I'm not going to look into it because I'm only going to use them for car shows.

In many states in the U.S. it is permissable to have the   license plate(or plates, if one is in a two plate state) from the year of manufacture of the car as legal "antique" or "historic" registration. For instance, my 1966 230SL is registered a pair of 1966 Virginia plates, my 1954 M.G. TF is registered with a pair of 1954 Virginia plates.  Finding a nice set of such plates can become quite a pleasurable treasure hunt!

Mike,

I will have to call the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles and see what they say.  I already have a current style custom plate, MIT STIL which means WITH STYLE in German, and I don't know if I want to give that up.

Here is a good site if you want to learn more about California plates.  Historical plate designs, banned plate letter combinations, etc. Click the California Plate FAQ link for information on the year of manufacture plate program. Unfortunately, the program only applies to 1962 and older.   www.calpl8s.com
