Thinking of renewing my original shocks until I rang M.B agent £906.86. is there anywhere preferebly in the U.K that does not rip off to that extent,is there a way to tell if they are shot Many thanks Mike

Mike euro car parts have them listed,Bilstiens which is what i have fitted, £60 each.

 Find a Bilstien supplier/dealer rather than a Mercedes Dealer and you can save a lot.

In the Porsche world a well regarded alternative is to have Bilstein rebuild the existing units. I believe there are two Bilstein rebuild locations here in the US...East and West. There are also independent, certified rebuilders as well. You might want to reach out to the UK rep below or contact the German headquarters and inquire. Good luck.

There the right part numbers i just crawled under mine to check, Third hand information about euro car parts, My man said he wanted reg number,Which you have done, so , Wembly depot have 2 fronts and 3 rears in stock, Available overnight,

There is a spec in the big blue book for checking them. It has to do with relaxed length. Basically the longer the absorber the more oil has leaked out.

They also get "dead " areas at the top when the nitrogen leaks out.

In the past replacement Bilstein shocks were advertised as "guaranteed for life".  I suspect that this applied to the original purchaser of the replacements shocks only.

I always heard that it was very difficult to get them to live up to this warranty if they go bad.

I do like them better than any other gas filled shocks by far. I have never tried a set of Konis.

Hello Richard,

The original shocks are gas filled Bilsteins.
In the 1972 version of the "Technical Data" booklet, pages 339-351 Bilstien part numbers, test values and more information than you will ever need can be found. The suspensions on these cars are tuned for these gas filled shocks, since they actually provide a certain amount of up-force besides dampening up and down movement.

Thanks everyone for the great info specially Reggie for crawlling under his car for the numbers,just been told by a very respected member that the 230 rears are not the same as the 250 or 280 so those part numbers for the rears would be incorrect? any views on this.Cheers .Mike {or part numbers}

I would say that most shops use the same version Bilstien shocks in all W113 cars these days.  In fact, I have a 1974 Bilstein factory catalog which lists the same shocks for all W113 cars. The Bilstein numbers listed;   #B 36-529 fronts and #B 46-539 rears.  The Bilstein steering dampner shock was # B 22-246

Joe's advice is spot on 'as usual'  

Looking through parts lists, the 230SL started with a Fintail rear shock absorber 111 326 0100 which then changed to 108 320 0131. The Bilstein part # for that is B46-0537

The latest part # on the EPC for the 230SL rear shock is 113 320 0031, same as the 250SL and 280SL (B46 0539)

KYB, Sachs seems to work well with benz too but a bit cheaper than Bilstein! Anyways all seem to work well and you don't need to pay hefty for individual shock parts.
