thoughts about a car just sitting in the garage
« on: August 20, 2010, 13:39:48 »
After 7 years of ownership I keep looking at the covered sl sitting on the lift in the garage.  Despite the glorious summer we have had and a mechanicalyl sound car,  life gets inthe way and I havent done a show or a drive with the exception of one starbux trip a month ago.

I really enjoy the car but now perceive it as frustration in that I can't take it out and really "use" it and each time i see it sitting up in the garage it pains me.  Perhaps as the 16 yo  goes off to college in a few years there will be more time but I starting to think about moving on.   I'm sure, this and that will break and Ill never be completely happy with the lifelong process of restoration but having it sit idle isn't good for the car. I'm thinking perhaps someone else will get more enjoyment.

Maybe Ill take it out tonight.  I needed to vent

I'll add to that.
Take the ride tonight with your 16 year old.
Let him/her drive !!
I got a lot of pleasure out of tossing the key to my daughter and telling her to take it for a spin (without me and with MANY rules  ;) ).

Try to enjoy it as much as you can as long as you can...
I just sold one of my babies today, so i am down to one now, and i feel sad.
i can only imagine how hard it is to let go the only one you have.

If you sell it you'll regret  it!  I know I did when I let my 67 250sl ZF5 go.

I gave my 230 to my daughter about 15 years ago.  She can't afford it so I still have it under my roof.  It worked out great.

Keep it - half the fun is knowing that you own one. I have two small children and dont' get to drive mine much either (an average of 1500 kilometers a year), but I would never dream of selling it unless I really needed the money urgently and had no other options...
I sold my MGA a couple of years ago for the same reason - it just sat there most of the time, but within a couple of months, I realized that my life wasn't the same without some old relic in the garage and the option of driving it whenever I want even if it's a rare event :-)

Don't sell it!!! If you do, you might end up putting the money in the stock market, and watch your $ evaporate slowly and painfully. Or, you might put the money in the bank and then end up spending it on something silly, like jewelry for your wife. Eventually the kids will move out (change the locks quickly when they do) and you'll have time for yourself. I'm hoping this happens to me someday.

Years ago, a friend of mine kept an old Harley in the garage. He never rode it.

Had something to do with keeping his wife's jaws tight.
