Engineering Tags/Label Placement: STAR Article

MBCA members, there is an article on label placement for the Pagoda in the new Star Magazine.

I think I found an error or two; anyone care to read it and comment?

I received my copy of the Star in the mail today and I read the article "Sticky Business" to see if I could agree or disagree with the information in the article.

I am not an expert by any means, since I have only owned my 280SL for about 1.5 years,  but I did have it repainted and have taken steps to research the proper placement of labels on my vehicle.  I received all of my information from pictures I could find of other 280's, information from Bob Geco (who supplied me the labels) and some detailed pictures in the Technical Manual of this Group.

Here are my observations:
1.) Labels 1 & 2, I do not agree with the placement of the "Important !  Use cover with No. 100 only" show in the Star article.  This label belongs on the opposite side of the recovery tank.
2.)  Labels 11 & 12The red tire pressure label and the white engine oil label are placed incorrectly.  Their positions should be reversed.
3.) Label 7 looks to be in the correct location, but the shape and format is different than what i have and what I believe to be correct
4.) The snowflake also appears to be applied incorrectly. My understanding is that it belongs in the in the extreme bottom left corner of the drivers side of the windshield (LHD).

who wrote the article and has copyright? Could we get permission to put the content in the Technical Manual or as an article in Pagoda World ?

The Mercedes Club of America holds the copyright to the entire content of The Star magazine. There may be an author copyright on the article and the photos might also be copyrighted.

As far as I know, the Editor of our own Group magazine Pagoda World has access and permission to use the Mercedes corporation Archives but it is very unlikely that The Star is part of the corporate Archives.

As a Contributing Editor and frequent contributor to The Star, generally the author is the one that has the right to reproduce said article first; at least that is in documents I've signed.  The entire magazine is copyrighted, too.

The MBCA is not affiliated with MBUSA or Daimler and is not part of the corporate archive at Daimler

The MBCA is generally quite cooperative in letting articles be reproduced.

Peter, the Acting Publisher of The Star is Richard Simonds, so I suggest that you bring the issue up with him during the European event--I noticed he will be there with you.

I brought the article to attention here, for certain we like to ensure that everything is correct prior to inclusion anywhere such as our Tech Manual.  One of the references listed as a "source" for such tags supplied some tags that are not correct for my car at least, and thus I am not certain that his knowledge is accurate on the topic.  Best to get a consensus.

Just to add to the discussion.  Labels 11 & 12 as shown in the article are in the correct location, (Tire label to the left of the Oil label).  I have a originial Euro spec 280SL that has not been repainted inside the trunk area  My labels (11&12) are in the above said location.

Also, the "Important" label is on my radiator over the the return hose connection.  O fcourse my lables are in German language, not English.

Question what does the "snow flake" mean.  Is it for the type of glass with thermal characteristics.

It is a factory label, put on to verify that the car has been filled with antifreeze (coolant) and it indicates minimum temp effective.

I am glad Mr. Vieth took the  time to right this article and  bring it  to the the attention of the Mercedes-Benz Pagoda SL owners who are members of the Mercedes-Benz club of America. I meet Mr. Vieth at a Concours.He is a nice guy and trying his best to make the judges realize that these Engineering Lables are part of an original car make up and should be judged with the rest of the car. I hope another article appears in the Star or Pagoda news latter this year.
