230 ignition key barrel

Hi.  I have been reading the threads but can't seem to find a solution to my problem.  I am working on a 1965 230SL.  When I turn the key to start the car, it doesn't 'spring back' to the run position (#2 ? ).  There doesn't seem to be any spring at all.  I brought in a new electronic switch for the back  but it appears the spring should be in the barrel.  So, I've taken the barrel out of the dash but can't find a way to get it open to see if the spring is broken.  I read about inserting the key, turning to the #2 position and then removing the chrome bezel but that doesn't seem to work in any key position. (I worked at it with a screw driver and hammer but don't want to do too much damage.)  I also see a couple of holes in the chrome.  I tried tapping there with a centre punch but it doesn't seem to move.  Does anyone know if it is possible to open it and access the spring?

I would appreciate any help I can get.

I am posting a couple of pics.

Thanks, Lockie
