removal of the round steering wheel pad

The center pad on the steering wheel seems to be held in place by three clips. What is the best way to remove this pad without damaging it.
Thanks,

As the Technical Manual recommends: "The hub pad is fixed to the wheel by three hollow plastic connection sleeves. Grab the perimeter of hub pad with both hands and pull it off the hub. Sometimes it may be necessary to use a blunt piece of wood and pry the pad away from the signal hub."

The white plastic connecting sleeves loose some of their tooth after repeated use (extraction of pad) and can be replaced. I think it's a real cheap part to buy.
