almost matching numbers

In my car the "Aufbaunummer" stamped on the hood, soft top cover, and hardtop (4430) is slightly different from the ID plate and data card (4438). Has anybody else noticed such a small difference in their car? Could it be that the Mercedes worker just took a 0 for an 8 after too many beers or something?
