Where is the best place to find a locking gas cap for my '70 280SL like the one in the attachment ?
Is this one "authentic" as per what was offered as an option in 1970 ?
Would my car require a vented or a non-vented gas cap ?

What's even more of a shock is when you loose both keys to your new cap after putting it on the car and running empty. That's what recently happened to a friend of mine.

The gas cap is not ventilated. As your car is a 1970, it should be a "one-key" car. That would make the cap a 000 471 47 30. It can be ordered custom keyed to match the rest of the locks on your car. The current MB USA list is $284. Shoot me an email (dgallon@cox.net) if I can help further.

When i ordered a new one for my Pagoda I was told it could no longer be ordered to match the car key so I had to get one with new keys... It was around £250 GBP mark.

Has anyone had luck ordering a locking gas cap to match the original keys based upon the data card code? I see Dave Gallon mentions this can be done in this thread but Tom Hanson at the Classic Center advised it was nearly impossible. I trust Tom but wondered how Dave was able to do this in the past. I hate to add that fourth key if I can avoid it.

It's a relatively simple matter to modify the lock to fit your key and if you don't want to tackle it any competent locksmith should be able to do it.

I have tried to contact Dave directly but no response, perhaps he is busy with all the firewall pad orders. I also read a post describing how the new caps could not be disassembled so thought it wouldn't be possible for a locksmith to re-key. Has anyone re-keyed since the caps became difficult to disassemble?

I bet you did not read this in the technical manual! Correct?

If you have a double-sided car key and the gas cap uses a double-sided key then a locksmith should be able to change the pins to fit that key.

I ordered my locking gas cap with matching keys about 4 months ago. Sticker shock is right! I ordered mine through the local Mercedes dealer with the club discount. The nice thing is it came with two additional keys.

. I often read the technical manual but in this situation just relied on forum posts. Big mistake the tech manual is very informative on this topic. Even better though is 71Beige's response that he was able to order a cap with matching keys. I will look into that further and know I have the locksmith option as well.

The parts person at the dealer needed my VIN. I understand it came from Germany. Took about 2 1/2 weeks to get it. I don't remember what it cost but I keep all receipts. I want to say it was a little over $300.00. Expensive but, looks great. You MUST REALLY twist it on to ensure the cork creates a tight seal and the cap doesn't fly off.

I was able to rekey mine so the glove box key works it. Takes some fiddling around but with some help from Joe A I was able to do it with a minimum amount of cussing.

Put a few drops of oil on the tabs and spring part of the cap and it will go on and off easier.

Re:huf gas cap... Can the indentations be drilled out? This would release the key piston out of the cylinder?? Can this be done?
