Linkage Problem
« on: January 15, 2011, 10:36:18 »
I have replaced all ball and ball sockets on my linkage ( including the ball on the fuel pump) also re bushed the throttle body.
I refitted the cross over shaft and inserted the 10mm locating dowel,i then adjusted the injection pump rod to fit the two balls(i measured the length of the rod and it is as per the linkage tour),with the throttle valve fully closed i adjusted and fitted the operating rod.
When i operate the crossover shaft the injection pump lever moves to the full fuel position but the butterfly is not at the fully open position, it is 5mm from the stop.
Has anyone had this problem and if so how did you overcome it
If anyone is interested in how i renewed the ball on the injection pump without removing the lever this  is what i did.
Using my Dremell with a small grinding wheel attached i carefully ground off the peen ed over/rivetted section of the old ball, i then got my motor cycle chain rivet removal tool (this fitted neatly over the lever and caused no damage or stress) i thenscrewed in the centre pin, this pressed out the old worn ball.
Hope This info: helps.

Hello Eric,

Interesting procedure for replacing that difficult ball on the IP lever, thanks.

Slightly  changing the length of the linkage rod going from the intake manifold pivot to the cross over rod or slightly changing the linkage rod going from  block pivot to the intake manifold pivot can give you a bit more travel at the venturi. Only change as much as needed and pay attention to make sure the other linkage are not altered by changing one of these to far. Keep checking to make sure the accelerator pedal does not become to high also make sure that it reaches the kick down switch (automatics) on the floor at full throttle. There is a accelerator pedal height adjustment on the linkage near the spring on the left firewall. You would need to remove the spring and loosen the 13mm head bolt to adjust the accelerator pedal.

Hello Joe,
I will carry out you suggestion on Monday and start at the IP lever end.
As i stated nothing else is connected i thought i would get this correct first

Hello eric,

You should not need to tamper with the IP linkage if it is correct.

Hello Joe,
I think you missunderstood what i was intending to do.
I am not touching the IP lever i am adjusting the rod from the IP lever to cross over shaft.

Hello,

You should not alter that rod either.  The IP linkage rod is a fixed 233 mm length.  Altering the engine block pivot rod or the short linkage rod going from the intake manifold pivot to the cross over rod (right side of engine) will change the travel of the rest of the linkage and venturi valve.

If I remember correctly from the manual, when the Injection pump lever is on it's stop (wide open), the lever on the venturi (butterfly) should be 1mm off of it's stop. 5mm is definitely too much though.

To clarify where i am with this problem,
The ONLY parts that are fitted is the crossover shaft, IP rod(set at 233mm,which coinsides with the fitting of the dowel locating pin) and the rod to the butterfly rod.
With this set up the butterfly is 5mm from its stop.
If you maintain the 233mm and adjust the throttle rod to fit in the throttle closed position,i am 5mm from the full throttle position.
Today i adjusted the IP rod to 235mm and this reduced the full throttle position to 4mm.
Further adjustments either + or -  did not cure the problem.
