John Lennon's car
« on: January 31, 2011, 09:22:16 »
Remember  a while back we were discussing the merits of someone asking too much money for JL's car? Well, it's back on the market at an even greater price!!!

For that kind of money, we could fabricate a matching one, AND fabricate a jolly good story to go along with it...maybe throw in a John Lennon piano too.

Honestly, don't think it will sell at that price.

Actually, no--I had never heard of them and their generic-looking website has me suspect from the start.  I suggested The Star classifieds, Hemmings, OurSL, and the SL Market Letter...

John Lennon's 1980's yellow turbo diesel wagon was on sale at RM auctions in Toronto a few years ago at $125,000 but there were no takers. It had big speaker boxes in the back.
Apparently Yoko hated him driving that car and the story is that he did not drive the car that day and when he walked out the front of the building the killer was waiting for him.

Just saw Saturday FT magazine (Aung San Suu Kyi on the cover) that showed  John Lennon's  Ferrari 330 GT? as being auctioned "next Saturday" with a guide of EUR120000/170000. The 330 was blue and a 4 seater, and once upon a time used to sell for prices not dissimilar to our Pagodas.
Maybe John left some good dope in the Pagoda, or maybe they'll be smoking some at the auction. Time will tell!

I have seen this car in person when I lived in Tampa.  Took a drive down to Sarasota for a Sunday visit to the Classic Car Museum across the street from the Ringling Brothers manion.  The SL was on display in the museum.  The museum must need some operating capital and wishes to sell it to hopefully another museum, at that price, (only a museum would want to pay that figure).  I do remember that the car is in original worn condition, as the photos show.  Infact the photos look like they might have been taken at the museum where the car is displayed.  I even took some photos of this car back then.  I must go dig them up.

I noticed under the "other cars" category that Steve McQueen's '70 911S may be coming up for auction.  (I used to own a 911S of that period and it was a terrific machine).  I clicked on the link in the first entry of the Other Cars thread, which took me to the "Early 911S Registry".  There, in entry #8, a poster guesses McQueen's 911S may go for $300-400K, or perhaps $450K (USD).  Entry #22 (out of a total of 66) speculated it will not clear $650K.  I wonder, might this be a reasonable estimate range for celebrity owned Porsche 911S?

Somewhat on/off topic - last fall I learned that the El Camino that featured (extensively) in the 'My name is Earl' TV series was auctioned in May 2010, and fetched something like US$ 6,000. So much for celebrity value. Since even I would have bought the car for that amount, I felt sorry I missed the auction. Then, just last week, for some reason I decided to check out the car's current whereabouts and it turned out to have just gotten sold at auction once again, only weeks earlier, for (as I recall) only a bit more, still under $10K. At this point, if there's anyone who knows the next auction that this car will be sold at, please send me a message so I can finally have a shot at getting it!

I live in the area, and have been looking for an SL for a few months. Each time this $495000 car would pop up on the top of my search, and each time, I though the poor seller did not realize he made a mistake and added an extra zero at the end :-)

Until one day I finally looked at it and saw it was the Lennon car... Yet I still think there's an extra zero....
