Fuel Injectors
« on: February 13, 2011, 23:32:49 »
My 1965 230sl has the DC8C45R2 fuel injectors. The tech. manual says I should have the R1 injectors. Can anyone tell me the difference and can I still use the R2's in my 1965 230sl or do I need to replace with R1's, and recommendation as to best place to purchase the R1's.

The R1 injectors are NLA, so stick with the ones you have.

Talking about fuel injectors, if I remove my fuel lines from the injector pump to the cylinders to replace them with nicer clean plated ones will I then have to bleed the lines or will it pump up to pressure and hopefully start when I turn it over?

Hello Gary,

Eventually the lines would  self bleed after  lots and lots of cranking.............
However, to save wear and tear on the starter, I would remove all the spark plugs and loosen all lines at the injectors prior to cranking the engine. Make sure you apply full throttle while cranking the engine. As fuel emerges at each line, tighten it up. When all are primed, install the plugs and fire it up.

Hey Mfriedman. You wouldn't happen to have a black Pagoda would you? Just curious because another member from your area (Donati - Arroyo Grande) mentioned he spotted one the other day. In any event, you guys should touch base, He has a great looking car!

Well, maybe its best he responds with it if he sees this thread (but I will mention you can find him in the members list and send him a message...) I think there may even be a couple other owners not far away, as well.

Martin,

Like Alfred has mentioned, the R1 injectors are NLA (no longer available) and the R2 injectors are what Mercedes (and Bosch) now supplies.

From the perspective of your 230SL's fuel injection pump, there is no difference between the R1 and the R2 injectors as the opening pressure of both injectors is the same.
The opening pressures are as follows:
a) 17.5 to 18.5 atm. for new injectors
b) 15.0 to 18.5 atm. for used injectors

The most important thing to note is that the differences in opening pressure of individual injectors should not exceed 3 atm.

In 2008 I replaced all my injectors in my 1964 230SL with a set of R2's and have had no problems whatsoever.
