Dose anyone know a way to free up a stuck WRD plunger? After immersing in boiling water the plunger only moved out about 1/4". Thank you!

As far as I know that is the distance you can expect.
Search and you will find: http://www.sl113.org/forums/index.php?topic=9244.0
Which WRD do you have, early one or current one?
It would be very helpful if you add an automatic "signature' to you posts telling us what car you have.  ;)

Hi,
no problem you'll be an expert soon!  ;)
Since you have a 230SL it is most likely that you have an early IP (R11) with the very old style thermostat:

A photo of the sensor is shown in this topic: http://www.sl113.org/forums/index.php?topic=5460.
Note that internal plunger (a wax filled cylinder) is longer than in later ones. You cannot buy it anymore so be very careful!
Here is a photo of the later sensors: http://www.sl113.org/forums/uploaded/WillS/200612815248_IP_Therm_Arrows.jpg
