need some help suggestions. Won't Start.
« on: February 18, 2011, 01:51:06 »
I recently took the 280SL out for a spin. It started fine I had a new battery put in it a year ago and the ground wires are all tight. I went to the bank and when I came out it would not crank or start. I called AAA thinking a battery problem. Not so the battery checked out fine I check the ignition coil fine leads tight. grounds tight. It still will not start. I can hear the hum of the fuel pump .

Can nayone suggest what they think it might  be?

It could be the iginition switch. Read all about it in the Technical Manual, Electrical Systems and sub catergoty about the the iginition system.  Make sure all other componets check out OK first, e.g. starter, etc. It explains how to by-pass the  keyed iginition to see if other electrical componets are at fault.

Hi Bob. Do I understand that you hear fuel pump but get nothing else when you turn the key. Just a click? If so, it could be the starter. Some have had this problem and actually solved it by giving the starter a whack (really  :o). I would also check the cable that leads to starter to be sure that connection is good.

Thank you both I suspect a starter . I just can not get under the car to tap it and have Sharon turn the key. If not I will move on to the ignition switch.
