headlight housing brackett screws
« on: March 02, 2011, 00:51:58 »
the headlight housing that screws into the front fender recess, that holds the headlight were rusted and I misplaced them. There are 4 of them. Does anyone know the size and kind of these screws? Are they metric ? self tapping? metal ?

Are these the screws?  I think  they are sheet metal but someone can verify from my photo.

it seems like there is a definite threaded hole in the fender. Like they are for a certain size screw.

Hey Mike,
they're not self taping and are maybe 3mm, philips head, and probably stainless steel. If you can't find those then use regular machine screws with lots of anti seize.

Mine had 4mm screws with a small head.

I had the brass ones machine to suit.

My car had sheet metal screws in it when purchased, but the holes are threaded.  I purchased stainless steel machine screws at the local hardware store, and they work great.  I used phillips head, as I'm clumsy and the "cross" helps me keep the screwdriver from slipping off and damaging paint somewhere.

Try A 111 990 0121 from an MB dealer.

Hello,

Yes, as indicated by Dan, I also believe these are originally phillips head screws.

From what I see mine are most likely the original screws.  Notice the marking in the headlight bucket.

Hi, Rmmchl,

That explains why I used ordinary brass screws and had the heads and the threadless tips machined to suit.

I have now found some steel cheesehead screws which have a similar size head to the original.

I agree that original screws are phillips head (there is one in my original picture),  but the head on a normal phillips screw is too big and does not fit well on the headlight frame.

I think the original concern has been whether the screws were self tappers or not because the EPC and some parts books for the 113s show self tapping  screws.

UHHhhhhh....... yeah.....

As Tim Kidder once said, '' The guy who comes up with your pricing must be smoking crack before he goes to work. ''

He actually sent that to MB in an email. It was sent off to Germany for further discussion. From what he tells me they haven't replied yet............ and that was about 3 years ago. You gotta love that guy - he shoots straight from the hip.

I priced a rear muffler for a 450 SL the other day. MBC list price was $507.00 - it's now $713.00!
I know you can get them after market, but really; 700 bucks for a muffler? On a 450SL?
