Fan clutch: Behr vs Meyle?
« on: March 02, 2011, 18:44:13 »
Hi all,

My 280SL is working fine as long as I drive, it's not overheating. But I see the temp gage going up when I'm trapped in traffic jams. Is there a way to determine if the fan clutch works properly? Could it be something else?

In case I need to replace it, I noted that the Meyle unit is one quarter of the price of the Behr unit. Does anybody have any experience with the Meyle one?

Thanks!

I replaced my fan clutch with the URO parts one from RockAuto and it works (especially since it's a quarter of the price of the Behr unit). I think someone on the site mentioned something about testing the fan clutch by putting resistance on the fan using a newspaper  ???. I've been battling overheating problems with mine too at a standstill, but mine has always been that way (hoping to install an electric aux. fan this weekend to solve it ;D). Is this something that just started happening?

Uro parts do not have very good reputaion, from comments I read on MB and BMW forums. But these comments were mainly related to rubber parts, so I don't know about the fan clutch.

I have used Meyle parts on several occasions and I found them satisfactory. But again, I would have liked to hear from someone who has first hand experience with a Meyle fan clutch.

i had a meyle one, came with the car when i accquired it. started leaking about a year ago. went with the behr since they are a very trustable brand and supply original parts for mercedes.
compared the two pieces and the meyle one didnt seem like it was put together as well as the Behr clutch IMO

quick test to test fan clutch- spin the fan as hard as you can by hand. if it spins more than 2 1/2 times, chances are the fan clutch is shot
to actually verify its not functioning- roll up a big "blunt" of newspaper and with the engine idling, jam it into the fan blades. if the fan stops, the clutch is bad
