something loose behind dash when cornering
« on: March 05, 2011, 17:46:08 »
Help please...
I dont know whether this is the correct forun for my question? Car is a 250SL 1967
When cornering, something sounds as it it is loose and slides with a clonk against the door side of the dash. It happens when turning (under speed) left or right and the clonk is sounding against both sides . In other words, something(s) is/are  shifting under the mild G force. The noise is not terribly loud but is irritating.
Any ideas?

i hope it's not the tack welds on the heater core.

The brace that runs along the inside bottom of the dash board has a U shaped channel along the top, small parts like the thumb nuts that hold the instruments can get dropped into this channel and lost (when work behind the dash is being done) then roll around making noises when cornering.

I'd suggest removing the glove box and check this channel (it follows the line of the lower dash pad but behind the dash board) for odd bits that have been left behind from previous work.

Thanks for the replies
I dread taking down the dash to check the heater core nut I will take out the glove box tomorrow and take a look around. I think the noise is 'heavier' than that which might be caused by smaller components like thumbnuts etc. It sounds a bit like a slide hammer!
