I have had the STAR Classic cd manual for our cars for many years. The cd is provided with directions to work on a PC running Windows 95. I was provided instructions several years ago to allow the cd to work on a machine running Windows XP. Now I am running on a Windows 7 machine. Does anyone know how to get the cd to run on a Windows 7 machine?
Thanks,
Ted

Ted,

If I remember correctly, there is a setting that can be used in the Windows 7 environment that you can change to run older programs in Windows XP mode.

Unfortunately I can't give you more info as I only played with a Windows 7 machine once and that was a while back when trying to get some older software to work on my wife's work computer. I must confess that I didn't pay much attention to the finer details. Happens when you get frustrated...  ::)

I'm not using Windows 7 myself yet (still very happy with XP Professional), but I dread the day that I need to upgrade...

Maybe try searching the Help files (F1 key) of the operating system as a start.

Windows XP mode comes only with Windows 7 Professional , which costs extra ($79.54 from Amazon for upgrade from Home Premium to Professional).  It works for most of my XP programs, but is quite slow to start up, and I haven't yet taken the time to figure how to print directly from XP mode.

Unfortunately I do not have the Windows 7 version that allows me to operate in Windows XP mode. Fortunately we are Mercedes owners. In addition to posting my question on our website I also contacted Mercedes. They responded with easy to follow directions that work. Here are the directions which others might need in the future.

Using the STAR Classic CD on Windows XP or Windows 7

1.    Insert the CD into your CD Drive.

Note: If a page shows up stating that you need Acrobat 4.0 or better, and
you already have it installed on your PC, then ignore the message and close
that window.

2.    Double click on the "My Computer" icon.

3.    Right-click on the CD Drive icon that is running the STAR Classic CD
and select the "Open" option.

4.    Double click on the "Program" folder.

5.    Double click on the "welcome.htm" and the STAR Classic program will
run shortly thereafter.

If the above referenced instructions are not successful in allowing you to
run / install the CD, please contact tech support online at

last year a purchased a pc with win 7 and i could not get any of my MB CD's to run.

My friend (IT specialist) and I installed WIN 7 virtual PC on my computer so I could run XP in virtual mode.
Still could not get the disk to work correctly.

If I messed with it enough it would work but never reliably.

I ended up getting an old laptop and installed windows xp.  Works great!

visit a goodwill or a used laptop re-seller in your area and pick up an old laptop with XP.
