Question about the shift gate
« on: March 26, 2011, 18:44:27 »
I have a question regarding the chrome cover for automatic transmission cars.  I know that the 230SL's chrome cover uses the letters P R 0 4 3 2 and the 280SL uses P R N 4 3 2.  My car is a right hand drive 230SL and some time ago, my father must've changed the 230SL piece to a 280SL piece which uses N for nutreul instead of 0.  The letters appear on the right hand side of the shifting slot.  I have just bought on Ebay a 230SL chrome piece with the 0 for neutral but the letters seem to be on the left hand side of the shifting slot.  What side is it supposed to be on for a right hand drive car? Because I have seen many photos of left hand drive cars with the lettering on the right side of the shifting slot.  Please help. ???

What you bought is correct, there is only one part for both RHD and LHD cars.
Take a look here: http://www.sl113.org/wiki/TransmissionClutch/Shifter

be careful on buying the plastic insert-the one they sell on e-bay is for the 280sl------I bought one for my 250sl and sent it back-I bought the correct one from tom hanson a mbclassic.-----------230 and early 250sl's use another one-there are 2 types of plastic inserts. the slots are different

:) Thank you guys!  You cleared up my worries with your help.
One more question.  The shifter rod itself... I seem to have a short rod and the part I bought from ebay has a longer rod.  What's the correct one for Oct. 1964?

How long is long?
Are you sure you bought a 230SL shift gate and not one for another car of the same time?
A photo would help.  ;)
