Shifter linkage re-assembly issues

After installing new bushings and cleaning up all the bits I realized its not going back together so well..
When it fits through the new bushings on the plate, it sticks up around 4mm too high. I attached a picture showing my issue. Any suggestions?

I was also wondering if the bushing at the end of the main shift tube can be replaced? it lt looks like its held in with a pin. In the parts picture it looks like like you need to buy a new tube? is this so? Thanks

I was looking at this picture. These white bushings are taller the the black ones that I installed. Also that plate looks like it had a ridge where they go in, where as mine just fit flush on the plate.


My car is an early 230 SL, if that makes a difference. Thanks

717-113,  when I ordered my bushings they looked as they do in the lower picture, the white ones.  They fit into the holes in the plate, the raised ridge fitting into the recessed part of the bushing.  My plate also had the raised edges at the holes as seen in the second (lower picture).  I have a late 230SL so I am not sure if there was a change.  Did you get your bushings from a MB dealer?

looking at the parts list in the technical manual, I think I've got the right bushings for my plate. What doesn't make sense to me is how there are different sized bushings (white is taller then the black) yet they fit the same shift rod?

I just completed this project. The white bushings were the ones I used for the shift plate (the previous bushings were long gone causing my shift plate to rattle) and the new one worked out perfectly. I ordered the black bushings as well for the gearbox end yolk but discovered the original ones were fine - so I didn't use. Got the parts from MB Classic Center. I was thinking maybe you used the wrong bushings but you note that the white one are even longer.

Additionally, it was suggested by others to replace the bushings at the end yoke, however, it was really tight quarters and tough to see - and the bushings looked intact and in good shape -  so I put the plate back on and finished up.

thanks, That is a good write up. its looks like the newer style set up (bent shifter)
I found my camera so here's some better pictures of my plate. I took one of the bushings out so you can see there's no ridge on the plate where the bushings go.

230s before chassis # 14258 have the flat plate (and black bushes).

Also, the lower boot is a different part #. See wiki.

Hey naj, does that mean the link rods are wrong then? They stick up way higher then the bushings... It looks like the early 230 like rods are no longer available?

Yes, the EPC is showing different part #s. Neither are available anyway.

Maybe you could shim up your existing ones.
