Heat protection shield, rear muffler
« on: April 04, 2011, 22:53:46 »

Hi--

I am starting to replace things (finally!).

My car has a new trunk floor welded in, and I can't figure out how or where to install the heat protection shield at the rear muffler.

Does the shield bolt through the floor between the muffler and the floor?

Does the part of the panel that drops down (90 degree bend) fit between the fuel tank and the muffler?

I've looked at several photos at Motoring Investments and cannot see the panel. It may be in witness protection instead of heat protection. LOL

Does this picture help? It shows the heat insulation at the rear muffler, both inlet and outlet sides.
It is from 66andBlue from a post where he was helping me.

Hi--

Sorry, I wasn't very explicit about the heat shield.

Please see the attached pictures.

This is a large shield, about 14 inches long, and each side of the bend is about 6 inches.

Thanks for your help.

Joe,
this shield was installed only on 230SL and only until VIN 15659, that is the reason why you will not see it on the Motoringinvestment web site (I believe there is only one 230SL).
Is your car older? Cannot help you with installation instructions, my 230SL does not have it.

I'm a newbie, so don't know about removing or installing, but I don't see a photo yet that answers Joe's original question. Here's one that just might help from under my '65 230SL, #09474.

Thanks, pj and naj. Just what I needed.

It's interesting that is was discontinued after '65.

It does look perfectly designed to trap mud and moisture to hasten the rusting of the trunk floor--maybe that's why it was discontinued.
