Vintage Photos
« on: April 07, 2011, 14:59:32 »
I found some old slides taken on a road trip to the southwest US back in December 1967 in my 7 month old 250 SL (Predecessor of my 280 SL). The trip from LA started in fine weather but as you see, we ran into snow (lots of it) at the Grand Canyon and for pretty much the rest of trip up through Monument Valley and Bryce Canyon before heading for home. Only had to chain up for about 15 miles total and we were virtually the only car on the roads which were for the most part, unplowed. Everyone else had better sense then to drive in that weather:-) It was an amazing journey in an amazing car.
As to my 280 SL, I hope to get it back from the shop next week after some work (all new rubber bushings, Shocks replaced, radiator recored, steering tightened up and few other items). Top down weather is fast approaching.

One more. Sorry for the quality but not too bad for 43 year slides.

Those are amazing, John. The snow reminds me right away of the Mercedes works commercial "Sonntagsfahrer," which has been discussed in a different thread.
Thanks! And if you've got more...

Cool photographs... and good to see I'm not the only person with snow-chains for their Pagoda!

I don't think I would take my car out now if there was even a whiff of fog in the air:-) The Chains are long gone now.

Thanks Peter, I was young back then and didn't know any better. Sure was a fun trip though.

Took delivery May 20, 1967. If you read my entry in the new member introductions, http://www.sl113.org/forums/index.php?topic=529.450 you will see why I am driving a 280 SL today.

I liked the 250 SL's interior much better, real chrome on the bright work, rigid door pockets  and no side marker reflectors:-)

Sorry to hear the 250 got piled up, you'd still have it today.

Really cool pics, thanks for sharing them with us John. Althought I would never take my car out in the snow now, there is something really special about driving in snow, the light, the muffled sounds, the warm cosiness inside the cabin....must have been a great and memorable trip :-)
