More vintage photos - my 280SL
« on: April 08, 2011, 21:59:49 »
Been digging through trays and trays of slides and I thought I would post a couple of these taken of my 280SL in April of 1969. Car was a little over 6 months old. Wish I had more but at least the quality is pretty good this time :)

That's fascinating... 6 months in and no cover on the shock tops.

Lovely pics from a proud owner!

Thanks for your nice comments. The engine compartment dosen't look that quite that clean these days and most of the zinc chromate plating is gone but still not in too bad shape. Are the covers you are referring to the rectangular ones over the subframe mounts? I hadn't noticed that until one day I was looking at photos of my 250 SL's engine compartment and realized they were missing. I was informed by another member of this forum that they were not installed on 280SLs.

...and no cover on the shock tops...

The 280SL's didn't have the rubber "thumb caps" on the top of the shock absorbers.

Beautiful photos John.

Here is a picture that I previously posted of my 250 SL's engine compartment. No "nipple" on the shock mount and plastic cover over the Sub Frame mount. I took delivery on May 20, 1967 so this was an early one.

Looks a lot like mine.  Kudos to the previous owner (Vince) for keeping it that way.  My radiator expansion tank stickers are on the other side (same).  The brake booster was replaced, but I have the original which no doubt has the documentation on it.

There seems to be a slight variation in pattern of the firewall pad in the 280 vs. the 250.  The 250s' pattern doesn't seem quite as pronounced or defined.  Mine is original to the car.

John,

I also notice that you have the shock tower cover on , as I also have, but in another thread, it was indicated that 280's did not have it.  Is that something that we both have wrong?

James, your are correct. I traded in my 250 on my 280 back in '68. Sorry for the confusion

You have it right Garry, another thing the early cars (230/early 250) had that the later ones didn't.

John (49er')

Can we have a couple of more photos of your engine bay.  I am trying to get all the right hose clamps on my 280 and whilst the earlier photo shows some of the clamps, a view from the other direction, knowing that it is original, would be great.
Thanks
Garry

Hi Garry, I did post a Black and White picture on this thread "VDO water bottle bracket" a while ago http://www.sl113.org/forums/index.php?topic=13651.msg93171#msg93171

When I recently brought my car back to "life", I opted not to use OEM clamps on the new hoses so I am afraid that part of the car is not original. If you would like a high res version of that B&W photo, let me know I will e-mail you one.

Thanks John,

Correct me if i am wrong but there appear to only be 7 5mm wind up hose clamps as marked on the photo.  In checking the B & W photo that appears to be the lot?

Hi, Garry,

It seems to me that the water hose clips use a wider band (9mm ?) as compared to the 5mm band on the vacuum hoses.

I believe Naj is correct. There are two sizes for the bands 5 mm and 9 mm. The 5 mm is used on the vacuum line to the booster, while the heater line has the 9 mm bands. You would just buy however many meters of each, and the number of cotter style clamps you need.

So just to confirm, there are 5 5mm clamps and 2 9mm clamps for the correct fit in the 280?
