hard to start after fill up of gas.....
« on: May 04, 2011, 21:44:32 »
Hi Guys the cars runs great except when the tank is full.
actually it runs great until I stop for like 10 min than it is hard to start only with full tank. I tried starting it with the gas tank off and still not good.My car a Euro 280sl with the simple fuel susytem with only the little black box on the right rear fender.
Can this be flower pot related?
Thanks

Just a wild guess, thinking out of the box...

If the tank is full, there is a lot of pressure on the return line in the flower pot...so, if there is any obstruction (say, 40+ years of crud) or a weak pump, this pressure might be inhibiting fuel flow?  Just a guess here.

I was thinking the same thing, also the top vent may be restricted as well. This coupled with a full tank would complicate matters. As for the flower pot, I could not believe how much build up can accumulate in the tank.... it worth a check, however a full tank is a lot of fuel to catch in a pan before you drop the filter.... :)

Where is this gas smell?

You have several vent lines from the tank.  There are clamps and hoses and lines, leading to the canister in the trunk.  If the integrity of any of this isn't 100% you'll smell some gas vapors.

I agree with Michael, I replaced all hoses and clamps to the canister and all fuel smells went away. Even though visually all appeared to be ok.

I have a slight smell in the trunk when I open the lid. Interesting...I had the tank repaired as part of the restoration. Sounds like hoses and clamps?
