Registration in Ohio

A question for Ohio residents.

I have purchased a car in Georgia. I have a bill of Sale and the Georgia Title from the Seller.

I have also signed a Nonresident Certificate of Exemption stating that I will move the vehicle out of the State of Georgia with the intent of export to Australia thus avoiding paying 6% Sales Tax.

The car will shortly be in Blacklick Ohio and after PUB I plan on driving it from there to LA to ship home after some modification work.

The question is what is the best way to be able to drive it. Can I register it given that I am a non resident, is there a 30 day or shorter permit system operating that I could use.  I have established that I can buy insurance.
 
To assist, I have my own US Social Security number, a friends residential address in Dayton and an International licence but i cannot work out from the Ohio DMV web site if that can handle such a situation.

Any locals have any comment?

I know there is a 30 day temporary tag in Ohio: http://bmv.ohio.gov/fees_for_services.stm that's the fee chart and you can see the fee is $18.50 for a temporary tag.  Michigan has 60-day temporary tags as well as 30-day.

The registrar has plenty of contact information (phone and email) http://bmv.ohio.gov/contact.stm perhaps and email first, I can certainly call them on your behalf if you make no headway via email.

You will certainly need to have the vehicle insured at the minimum; another question to ask is whether or not they need to do something with the title, provided it has one.  Let's hope so.

What would be great is if you could find someone to lend you an "in-transit repair plate"; that's how I moved my car from the restorer to home prior to dealing with getting the title (an elaborate process here for an untitled vehicle), insurance and registration.  The fee for such a plate in Michigan is pretty cheap, but you have to be an auctioneer or somehow involved in automotive repair or something.

There might also be an in-transit registration for Ohio, that would be a question to ask.

I have bought many cars over the internet and flown out to pick them up and drive home.
I always make sure I have three things:
   1. Bill of sale in my name.
   2. Valid title signed over to me.
   3. Valid certificate of insurance.

I was stopped in Wyoming one time (for speeding, of course) and was told by the patrolman that I was valid for travel with those three items.
I think the temporary tags are for residents to give them a time period to get their plates acquired. My state allows one to put a sticker in the window stating "In Transit" and a purchase date
which is valid for 30 days.

BASIC road site assistance means it includes towing the vehicle for free but only up to 3 miles!  Perhaps you can purchase a higher level assistance as we can, might be worthwhile to inquire. If Tom comes along for the ride perhaps he may have the "Plus" level membership which provides more towing miles.

To right some of the wrong, am trying to negotiate a '64 230SL buy that is in a million bits in Perth at the moment as well.  Need to fill up the shed.

PLUS membership @ $94 includes the extended (100 miles) towing coverage--if you buy it you won't need it and that's Murphy's Law and peace of mind.  ONE tow anywhere will cost you more than membership.

DMV Ohio have emailed that I can get a 30 day permit, GeicoOnline have indicated that I can get insurance and am now a member of AAA USA.

 Alls good and Tom is travelling back with me from PUB to LA.

Hello Gary,

Cars bought out of State and brought into to Ohio can be registered by an Ohio resident after the VIN numbers are checked by an automobile dealer. Not a big deal. Some dealer charge a slight fee.

Two steps forward one step back.  GEICO Insurance have decided that as I only have an Australian and International licence they are unable to insure without me getting an Ohio licence,  Doesn't get much more inward looking than that for an insurance company.  
Even had the nerve to ask if there is anything else that they could help me with. Told them they had already given me more than enough for a one man comedy show.

Keep trying.

Progress Direct Insurance, had no problem with an international Licence and has the business.

GEICO=Government Employees Insurance Company.  Started out serving only government employees.

They won't insure anyone who OWNS a radar detector.  They have, or used to have a questionaire about driving habits and posessions that probably most enthusiasts would "fail".
