Noisy speedometer cable

Hi All
Can anyone advise on how to lube this cable?  It goes from mostly no problem to occasionally unbelievably loud.
Thanks.

A different technique that recently worked for me was to disonnect the cable from the drive at the front of the engine, unclip it, and suspend it from the hood latch with a piece of wire.  Then I drizzled some ATF in the end and left it tied up for a day.
