Auto Trans gate plastic insert ?
« on: May 13, 2004, 10:21:34 »
I have been told that this plastic lighted insert came in 3 patterns [a,b,c] depending on length and pattern.

I have been qouted $45 to $90 for after market inserts that snap into place.

anyone order these or know of suppliers; MB sells this as one unit with chrome cover for $300+

I posted a repsonse on Dorian's site as I hit there first this afternoon. The usual suppliers handle there, K&K, Millers, SLS. SLS showed up as the cheapest, but I do not know if they are current on pricing.

I am curious to hear from others on the site about the three different types of patterns. That was something I had not heard of before.

AFAIK the plastic insert (which is broken on many cars) is the same for all W113 models. I bought a new one from Van Dijk two years ago and can't remember now what I paid for it, but I don't believe it was more than maybe $15. There's a separate lighting fixture with wiring for the 250 and 280 SL that lists for $35 in their 2003 catalog.

When I restored my car in 1999-2001, I bought a plastic insert from Miller's, I think it was about $15 or so.

When I had my unfortunate transmission explosion in the summer of 2002, the shifter violently broke this insert.  When the mechanic was putting it all back together, he obtained another one from another supplier and THAT one (which I still have) was something like $80 but included a light that my original one did not.

I don't know the "correctness" of the light/lamp or not, but I do know that it is annoyingly bright--way too bright especially in light of the fact that the gauges are (by modern standards) comparatively dim, even when "full on".  Any all the bulbs were changed and they are all working.  Palo Alto did the instruments.

I suppose I need to remove that lamp from that shifter insert and find a smaller one.
